Who doesn’t love a good road trip through rural Kentucky? Part of the Daniel Boone National Forest, Red River Gorge is one of the state’s most beautiful areas, notable for its waterfalls, natural stone arches and unusual rock formations.
A pit stop I definitely recommend is Rock Bridge Trail to Creation Falls, a small but multi-tiered waterfall that requires a short but steep 1.4-mile loop hike down into the gorge. Just past (or before, depending on which way you hike) the waterfall is The Rock Bridge, the only natural bridge arch in the area as it’s the only one that crosses over the Red River. The area is good for its scenic drive, too. The Red River Scenic byway is 46 miles long and my own drive through was stormy and magical — I got a double rainbow! Life Rule No. 3: If you spot a rainbow, always, always, always stop whatever else you’re doing and take some pictures. (I one time tried to find the end of a rainbow but it’s basically impossible so, while that’s fun, I don’t actually recommend it.)
